Inspired by Horst Hamann's photo essay "One Night on Broadway" (Schirmer/Mosel, 2004) which he shot continuously for twelve hours in one single evening (from 8pm to 8am) while wandering the streets of New York City, I thought it might be interesting to recreate the experiment here in Washington, DC. The idea was to capture images of the city in one "take", as a continuous story with few edits, and no pre-planning. This leaves little time for setting up complex shots and forces the photographer to think "in the moment."

My project was slightly less ambitious, and a bit more leisure, as it started at the National Gallery of Arts, continued to the Kennedy Center for an evening's performance, and went on to the shops at Georgetown. Although nowhere near the scope of Hamann's book, it was nevertheless a lot of fun, and rather inspiring.

The images on this page were taken sequentially from about 4pm to midnight. Nearly all of the photos(except four) are shown exactly as the camera saw it, with no cropping, color correction, or other image manipulation. The equipment used was a Nikon D70 digital SLR, with a single lens: the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR. All images were shot hand-held, with no flash or tripod.
