Eve and I took a 230 mile bike ride over to The Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc and toured the USS Cobia, a WWII Submarine. The USS Cobia was laid down in March 1943 in Groton, CT and launched November 28th, 1943. She had 6 war patrols, sinking 13 enemy ships and suffered only one casualty for the entire war, a 20mm gun loader hit by machine gun fire from an attacking surface vessel while on the surface.
I was able to arrange for a private tour for just Eve and I...we had a museum guide and there were also two other gentleman who came along. Both had served on submarines in the past and one had served 2 years on a sub very much like the USS Cobia so he was a wealth of information. This was a real eye opening experience...I could not believe how small inside this sub was, and about 80 to 90 men made up the crew. The Captains quarters were a bit smaller than our closet I think. We had a great time, although I wish we could have gotten into the conning tower. It got so late that I neglected to get any good outside shots either but I'm happy with what we did get done.
