s-l1600 (77).jpg

An antique 19th Century or earlier (much earlier) tsakli painting in mineral pigments depicting, within a pointed red nimbus, a wrathful green-bodied deity with a lobed belly wearing a tiger skin dhoti, his flying hair behind a three pointed diadem, his face contorted in a grimace with mouth open as if in a scream. He brandishes a skull club (Sanskrit: kepaladanda) crowned by a half vajra - the danda is made of red sandalwood or bone, with a silk ribbon tied around the upper part of the shaft. It symbolises the victory over the 3 realms and the realisation of the emptiness of phenomena. His left had is in tarjani mudra, the gesture of warning. 1 syllable (effaced) in Tibetan text to the reverse. 9.2 x 11.6
