An antique 19th Century or earlier tsakli painting in mineral pigments depicting a vivid triangular shape of flames with a blue centre at the heart of a mandala. At the end of a Vajrayana retreat, the practitioner is usually required to perform a ritual fire or 'homa' ceremonyto purify himself from any malevolence which may have arisen. This taskli depicst the triangular purification fire 'hearth' of wrathful or destructive activity employed in the homa ritual of Vajrayogini. This form is only used in extreme circumstances and amy only be performed for the benefit of others, to control malignant spirits or possession by the '5 poisons', or to control persecution of the dharma. The tsakli embodies all 4 continents which surround Mt Meru, and therefore the 4 elements - water, earth, wind and fire. 9.4 x 12cm
