My dad in law Vince Bartram came aboard Ontario after he arrived back from Korea on the Athabee...first trip(50-51) He was a C2 ERA and he noticed that the ship was serviced with only one set of vaps so when they were alongside in a foreign port on his first trip, he used the time he might have been ashore to get the second set of vaps up and running. It took a week or so of hard work and he told me that the salt deposits had hardened inside the intakes and this created a lot of extra work for him. He worked alone and had the satisfaction of seeing the vaps up and running smoothly. He was aboard when the Ontario was collided with down near Rio. He believed that it was pilot error and it caused a lot of problems because they had to limp home with one less engine. He went on to sail with her to the Coronation in 53 and finally left her to join Stettler in 1955 as CERA when he got his C1's. He retired in 1963 and was in active service through the entire war on Sally, Camrose, Blairmore and Seacliffe. He died in 2005 an old engineer from the prairies who served his country well.Those prairie boys made the best sailors for sure.

It is really good-O [sic] and swell as a reference to look up any of the boys. My first week over here I met Bill Price and Steve Elly. On the troop ship I ran across Pte. Mooney…Am on an English cruiser now. There are about forty Canadians on board.” - May/45, p.5 – HMCS Ontario Mess 39 “I just received the January News Letter and it did quite a bit of chasing to catch up to me so I thought it best that I tell you my new address. We haven’t been around very much lately but did take in the big football game at Hampden Park, Glasgow between Scotland and England. It was a good game but I must admit the English boys had it all over the Scots. The “Ontario” is Canada’s latest cruiser and it’s a corker. There are four of us Powell River boys on here and as far as I can make out they are Doug. Ingram, Syd Gaganoff and Jim Stapleton. I guess that’s about all for now. Thanks a lot for the News Letter, it’s really swell and I appreciate it very much.” - Jul/46, p.8 - “Replacing the Uganda in eastern waters was Canada’s latest and finest cruiser, HMS Ontario. She arrived with Ernie Sylvester (sic)…in time to take part in the official surrender of Hong Kong.”

MY FATHER IS J.MAURICE THERRIEN served on HMCS ONTARIO during ww2.He was from Dorion near Montréal qc and still alive now 91 and he is in Vetarans Hospital in STE-ANNE DE BELLEVUE qc.Looking for pictures of him......

My father F.J. (Jim) Catterall served on the Ontario early 50s as a Stoker. Amongst many activities, was part of crew when the Ontario did a complete South America cruise.

I just added many photos of HMCS Ontario's Pacific cruise just after WW2, when she sailed from the Clyde, through the Suez Canal, to Hong Kong, then ending up in Esquimalt in November, 1945. Please google "ken johnson hmcs ontario" (without the quotes) and they'll be at the top of the list.

I served in Ontario from Sept 1954 until June 1957 I will always remember her as my first ship and my shipmates in the Electrical Branch. The "broadside messing" The non air conditioning in the tropics.. The wind scoops to attempt to cool the mess, and the freak waves that would provide a non scheduled washing of the mess as the wall of water came in. The crossing the line ceremonies. I was a "shellback" in Jan 1955. My first sea voyage in Jan 1955. I had the middle watch, my first night at sea. We hit Cape Flattery and I crawled ot of my hammock,sick as a dog as they say. (I have never actually seen a sick dog) I assume it means sea dog. This was the real navy as we knew it during the war. We were close buddies, low pay, but who worried about money? We were in the Navy. The real Navy. We never heard the term "quality of life". If you wanted a softer service ...join the airforce.. Harvey Johnson retd. Chief Wrarrant Officer

Hello...Looking for information on my grandfather, Fredrick George Cunningham. He was in the Navy and apparently worked in the engine rooms of the Heron, Ontario and McKenzie during WWII(based in Esquimalt, B.C. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The top left photo of the Ontario crew in the blue uniforms was taken Sept 26, 1949, at Powell River, BC. at 10:30 am according to the ships log. Some of the background breakwater ships are still there. Thanks to the response from the Department of Defense, Naval archives in Ottawa for the above information.

hello there i have a box of pictures that my dad took when he was on tour in the pacific during ww2 they are of hong kong, egypt, etc, when the boiler blew up on the ship, various ship activities, he passed away and i would like them to go to the archives of the ship if anyone is collecting history on it his name is gordon birk please contact me at my e-mail thank you

I’ve just discovered this site and noticed the posting by Chris on 28 April 2011. Leslie Alfred (L. A.) McLean is my father. I am happy to say he is in good health and spirits and will turn 93 in February. I have some excellent photos of him onboard HMCS Calgary before he transferred to the Ontario, and of course I will be delighted to share them. I am also hoping to get a high resolution copy of the Ontario crew photo at the top of this page, taken at Pearl in Nov '45. It sounds like both of our fathers should be in this picture. My dad, William Allan served on the Ontario near the end of WW2 in the Pacific as a CPO. I would love to see any photo's of the crew in the hopes of finding him in them. He's 92 years old now.

Anyone Remember my Dad Al Graham?? He was a Shipwright(HT??) Served on HMCS Ontario on the Pacific cruise at end of war???Dont know much about it,but he receive the Burma Star...so obviousl from Pacific service during WW2!

Thanks for this site, I had never seen photos of the Ontario. My father, John Flockhart Darby, served on the Ontario, I believe, as a stores assistant in 1945. I have the official commissioning memento dated 26th April 1945. I lists officers, petty officers and signatures of his mess mates. I can email information from this 1945 booklet. My father Cdr Donald Clark passed away on 7 Jan 2007 at the age of 92. He did two tours on Ontario and loved the ship and its men. He was the head of the 'electrical department' and did a great deal of 'mad' tuning to the radar sets for the exercises in the Caribbean. He was introduced to Adm Sir William Tennant as Canada's secret weapon - something that he was always proud of.

My father served on the Ontario during the latter stages of WW2. He was an ableseaman. He has been wanting pictures of the Ontario. I guess they made 4 sets of pictures. Hawaii, Hong Kong, in the Pacific, suez canal and some other locations. He is missing a set of pictures that were taken around the Suez.
