29th June 2018

Our heatwave here continues - temperatures in high 20s C day after day. We haven't had any significant
rainfall here since early May. An extremely unusual state of affairs for the Pennine region
of Britain - I've lived up here for a quarter-century and cannot remember anything like it.
Wildfires have begun on the high moors west of here (where the photo next to this one was taken).
We've been able to see the smoke from our house, although thankfully we're not close enough to be affected by it.
When we were walking there last week, there were ground-nesting birds everywhere - skylarks, oystercatchers, curlews
- all of whom will have lost their nests and young in the burned areas. The plants and ground-dwelling
animals (such as hares) and their young will have died.
I now understand much better the fear of wildfires which occurs every summer in other parts of the world!

Here's a photo of the little lad, waiting for me to connect the hose-pipe up. He loves playing with the
jet of water to cool down!

Fires are dreadful things and the loss of wildlife is sad and having been in the thick of it I know just how your feeling.

Funny how dogs love to play with water - but mention "bath" and they go and hide!
Love JJ & Zak's comments.. but sorry to hear of your heatwave and dryness & fires - wow, I never
expected to read a story of a fire from where you live...

I imagine he snaps at the water jet, most dogs seem to love playing words th water.
Son David was on the Mountain Rescue First Aid team in the Staylebridge area on Tuesday night, he said it was like watching films of Californian or Australian wildfires,

Sorry to hear of your wildfire situation. The temps and winds have been high here, so a rash of wildflowers have erupted in our part of the world.
Jack is having a lot of fun with the heat.

Sorry about your hot, dry weather! We see this a lot now. And I always feel for the wildlife who are often victims. Good that Jack likes to play with water, you can keep him cool.

Quietly waiting for the action! V
In Holland it's very hot also and we had almost no rain in June.
