Phil Douglis | profile | all galleries >> Galleries >> Gallery Fifty: Using silhouettes as abstract symbols and metaphors | tree view | thumbnails | slideshow |
When we turn our subjects into silhouettes, we are abstracting them – often showing less and saying more in the process. We can use those silhouettes to create symbols and metaphors that provoke the imagination and thoughts of our viewers, creating meaning and telling stories. In this gallery, I will display examples of how we can use silhouetting as a communication medium. I begin this gallery with a selection of images photographed on a photo-tour of Indian Country in the Southwestern United States. I hope to add more examples from pictures made on my future travels. I present this gallery in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a detailed caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond. |
