Tied to her job, Hoi An, Vietnam, 2007

It was the tape measure that drew my eye. It hangs around her neck and around the bars that guard her window. While much of the world celebrated Christmas Eve, her work was her priority. The image is rich in color – reds, yellows, blues and a lavish spread of green, give life to the image. She may seem to be locked away here, but that tape measure linked to the window bars symbolically speaks of her connection to the world at large.

You are very perceptive, Carol. Her expression is intense -- she saw me through the bars, but nothing can stop her from completing her task. These people are very good at what they do, and the competition is tough. There are little shops such as this all over Vietnam, and some people work out of their homes as well. The tape measure along with the flowered fabric also illustrate the work of this woman, hard working and competitive and I know there are so many tailors in Hoi An wanting your business. I love the expression you caught on her face of concentration, unaware of world outside. They do wonderful work in very short amounts of time as well. The bars on the windows do suggest to me that they are considering themselves lowly but hard working individuals. They should all be praised in my opinion.
