Portrait of an artist, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Denver, Colorado, 2007

I found this artist taking a break behind her booth on the opening morning of the festival. She is not posing for a portrait, yet this is a portrait none-the-less. She seems relaxed, and self-confident. She may have good reason to be relaxed – the three paintings hung on the back of her booth are most likely already sold. They add vivid context to the portrait – they reflect her style and interests, particularly the use of symbolic roosters. The rooster is the national symbol of France and Portugal, brings good luck in China, and is held sacred in Japan and in esteem elsewhere in Asia. The rooster as symbol dominates the work of this artist as well. My environmental portrait of her also offers an incongruous contrast – the artist herself dresses entirely in neutral clothing, while the paintings are vividly colored. She seems to have poured herself entirely into her work –and is probably grateful for that cup of coffee.

Thanks, Patricia -- this image is all about geometry. Those blocks of rectangular shapes give the image a cubistic motif, which, as you note, is at the heart of the composition. And yes, the chair fits as well -- more rectangles and similar in color.

I'm interested in so many aspects of this portrait, large & small. The blocks of rectangular shapes that, to my eye, is a unifying compositional factor. Her body language that connotes an introvert's comfort outside the public gaze. The wonderfully outrageous frames she has placed on her works and how the chair upon which she sits seems to have a similar feel to it. She is obviously an artist who is doing what she loves.

Thanks for pointing out the rural relationship of straw hats and roosters, Celia. That links the elements within this image ever more closely. And thanks, too, for seeing the stark contrast between the pale figure of the artist and the vivid colors of her painting. As I noted in my caption, she seems to have poured herself entirely into her work, and is now beginning to recharge herself for her next project.

Phil, I loved that you noticed how the stark contrast of the artist in her white clothes against her colourful work would make such an evocative image. She appears dissociated from her environment, yet she is still linked to her roosters by her straw hat and slippers, which in my mind represent the simple life associated with farm life and chickens! And I also liked your whimsical comment about how "She seems to have poured herself entirely into her work" Yes! She indeed appears to be completely drained of all colour because of her work, but it suggests to me that she is also going to start with a clean slate for her next big project!
