Cheers, Coors Field, Denver, Colorado, 2007

I wanted to express some of the excitement that runs through a crowd of thousands of baseball fans. My concept is very simple – use three distinct layers to tell the story. I wanted a foreground layer of abstracted energy– arms, heads, and caps thrust skyward. The middle layer was the stadium and the playing field, along with the tiny figures of the baseball players. And the background layer would be the evening sky, a mixture of streaming clouds and a hint of the setting sun. The only difficult part would be obtaining the foreground layer – excitement is usually spontaneous, and the camera must be focused, framed, and ready for that instant. In this case, the problem was solved for me – the crowd was doing the “wave” –a ritualistic form of enthusiastic cheering that begins in one part of the stadium, and eventually circles the entire field. I could see the wave of cheering fans as it rolled towards me, and was easily able to make this photograph as the people just in front of me stood and shouted their support for their team.

Yes, we found similar moments, Shirley, and brought the excitement to our viewers through abstraction, layers and body language.

Phil, just noticed that this image so much resembles the one I took in the Bird's Nest during the Beijing Olympics. I'd like you to visit my Olympic gallery. I really enjoyed these events.http://www.pbase.com/wangxh/image/101737909

Thanks, Celia, for this wonderful observation. I am well aware that many of my pbase viewers living all over the world have never seen an American baseball game. But I wanted the body language in this image to speak to anyone about the energy and enthusiasm that baseball fans bring to the game. I also wanted my layered approach to put you, the viewer, into the crowd as well. Thanks for noting the symbolic "V" shaped cloud as a forecast for victory. As the fates would have it, the home team did indeed come from behind and win the game in "extra innings." And yes, this game was so evenly played and exciting that even the supporters of the losing team went home feeling that they had received their money's worth.

I've never been to a baseball game in my life, but this well-timed frame that you made here seems to be the perfect expression of the fantastic energy and atmosphere here at the stadium! By choosing a vantage point in the foreground among these joyously ecstatic arms, you put me right there in the moment among the crowd, as if I was one of the spectators myself. We don't need to see facial expressions - just the body language alone of these anonymous silhouettes speak tonnes about the excitement and cheer everyone is feeling that night. I particularly liked the V-shaped clouds that you included in the background too. "V" for victory might sound a bit too cliche, but the sky appears to have forecasted victory in the books for a particular team and its fans. And even though there has to be a losing side, I get the feeling that because of all the thrills and joys they will experience watching this game, most people will leave the stadium a winner!
