Chase on Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2004

You can find pictures of happy kids and beautiful sunsets in most travel albums and web pages. That’s not a bad thing – because such clichés can bring back personal memories of great value. But I try to do whatever it takes to avoid clichés if I can. I can often do so by using abstraction. Here I combine both sunset and youthful subject matter by abstracting them into a chase scene. By backlighting these people, they become silhouettes. I also abstract the sunset by stressing its effect, rather than depicting its beauty. The key to this photo is the child in the middle of the frame – he is incongruously small when compared to the adults he is chasing.

Belated thanks to Bryan and Ruth -- I just noted your comments today, and appreciate them. I am glad this image inspires you to seek new meaning in sunsets, Bryan. And I love your Latin motto in this context, Ruth, and how you see the role of the determined youngster. And thank you, Chris, for appreciating the role of the crop and negative space in this image.

Love this composition and how you cropped it as well as how you used the negative space and the light of sunset!

my school "motto" was AD LUCEM, latin for "towards the light", which is exactly what this photograph makes me think of! i see the three figures from middle to left as describing a growth process. small, bigger, biggest. a progression from child, through intermittant teenage years to an adult in the light. for that interpretation, i guess the right hand side figures become redundant, but i'm not sure, i do like them there. perhaps it symbolises the rest of society, while the determined youngster follows their own path and becomes their own person, and shines because of it.

Outstanding photo Phil. Very refreshing indeed. It has also inspired me to seek new sunset visions such as 'The Daily Catch at Sunset' . Thanks again for teaching me how to see. Bryan
