Selfie, Times Square, New York City, New York, 2016

Selfies have become so popular that rows of plastic recliners now await tourists visiting Times Square. They enable visitors to make pictures of themselves, seen in the context of Times Square, from a dramatically low position. This fellow seems as if he has entered a trance-like state, mesmerized by the image of himself displayed on the screen of his cell phone. A row of diagonal recliners fills much of the frame. His reclining form offers a powerful blue diagonal. Meanwhile, his thrusting arms, holding an upright camera, offer a contrasting diagonal counterpoint.

You have a highly developed sense of the ridiculous, Rose. I must as well, because why else would I make and post an image so absurd?

The bubblegum pink tones remind me of childhood. He is alone yet represents multitudes. What a culture of self-absorption. V

Thanks, Iris, for seeing the egocentric point of this image. Instead of savoring the unique experience of being in a place like none other, he absorbs himself in the process of sharing an image of himself with others. He is not alone. Thousands of others will do the very same thing every day here.

I love the absurdity of this image. This guy, in one of the greatest cities in the world, is more interested in his own image than in the exciting images around him.

Ridiculousness! A perfect word for this picture. You have to see it to believe it. Grown men, reclining on slabs of plastic in the middle of Times Square, making pictures of themselves with telephones. He is, as you say, utterly oblivious to the absurdity of it all.

I too love to capture candid selfie takers in their very often ridiculous looking positions to get their likeness image "just right"! This is a wonderful capture, depicting this ridiculousness. He is oblivious to how he appears outside of his cellphone LCD! The red colored surface makes this so dynamic as well.
