Translucence, Mission Beach, California, 2015

As the sun sets, it can illuminate translucent material and abstract anyone or anything within or behind it. Such is the case here. Many beachgoers set up fabric tents, awnings, and umbrellas as sun shields. When evening comes, golden light passes through them. This woman entered a glowing tent to retrieve something from her backpack. As she searched through it, I was able to frame her silhouette in the golden light. Her arched back echoes the curve of the tent itself.

Thanks, Rose. The curve of the tent support matches the curve of the woman's back, and also echoes the curving backpack and hat,as you note. While the person may linger awhile within those golden arches, I did not see her find any Big Macs in her backpack.

Warning heeded, Iris. And thanks for enjoying this image. Actually, I try not to "lurk around" when I make my images. For example, I made this image from a great distance with a telephoto lens and then cropped in on my subject afterwards. I was up on the boardwalk, and this tent was down next to the sea. I am "there" but really "not there" at the same time. I made dozens of images of different subjects without moving my position, or disturbing my subjects. If any of them would have seen me looking into my camera from a distance, they would not have known what I was zooming in on from a distance.

Be careful what you do in "glowing tents" especially when there's a photographer lurking around. Great shot, Phil.

Thanks, Nancy. Glad this picture works so well for you. It does for me as well. I made pictures during this "golden hour" of sunset light on all 27 evenings of this trip. I saw many backlighted tents such as this, but only once did I see anyone inside of those tents. And that was this woman. I made many images of her silhouetted shape within the tent, and this is the one that worked best.
