All in a days work, Central Market, Sucre, Bolivia, 2014

Another incongruous situation found in Sucre’s Central Market: a massive display of sportswear dominates the frame, while three incongruous mannequin torsos show off the goods at the right hand edge of the frame. My own interpretation of the scene is based on the somewhat bored reaction of the shopkeeper tucked into the upper left hand corner of the image. He seems to think this bizarre display is a simply business as usual.

Wonderful point, Celia. The clothing here is indeed unnaturally displayed, relating directly to the unnatural look of the mannequins. Without the shopkeeper, this image would say very little. His subordinate position is incongruous, making him less obvious and more abstract. We discover his presence almost as an afterthought -- and he certainly reflects the human value of boredom.

I love that everything in this image is so structured and rigid-the jeans are folded uniformly and the mannequins stern and stiff, and yet you can't miss the shopkeeper because he is distinctively soft and relaxed. And bored.
