Remnants of the Old Provost dungeon that once held pirates and soldiers captured during the American Revolution can still be visited in the basement of the Old Exchange, Charleston’s most important colonial building. Life sized period mannequins express a feeling of despair that almost certainly pervaded these premises in the mid to late 18th century. The prison pre-dates the Old Exchange Building. It was built upon the ruins of the original walled city of Charlestown. The dungeons are said to be haunted.
