Out of luck, Little Havana, Miami, Florida, 2013

As the late afternoon light grazed his weary body, this man was scratching the surface of lottery card after lottery card. The ground is littered with losing numbers. He looks as if the card in his hand has proved to be just as worthless. The image expresses such human values as resignation, frustration, dejection, and exhaustion. The warmth of the colors and the light stand in stark contrast to the lost hopes scattered upon the ground around him.

Thanks, Merri, for noting the role of the pay phone in this image. The phone seems as lonely as the man, and its colors mirror the man's to complete the linkage. Your comment adds still more human values to my own listing here. The phone that may not even function adds still another dimension to the littered residue of bets that never won, and the man who stares at his own lottery card in futility.

Two of a kind here. The man waits in vain for his fortune, the pay phone waits in vain for someone to use it. They are even leaning in towards each other with the green shirt and blue pants mirrored (but in opposite) by the phone and the green thing next to it. Chances are excellent he won't win anything and no one will come and make a call. Sometimes I check to see if pay phones like this still have a dial tone. Some do and some don't.

Good point, Tim. I would call addiction a human value as well. (Human values are not always positive).

Yet - they keep trying - I know that for many it is an addiction - but it is also the opposite of resignation.
