Echoes of creation: Sea Lion, South Plaza Island, The Galapagos, Ecuador, 2012

The Galapagos are otherworldly -- the islands are the tips of huge volcanoes, which plunge directly into the heart of the earth. I found this Galapagos Sea Lion slumbering on a slab of ancient lava next to our landing pier on South Plaza Island. Its rounded form echoes the massive curves in the inky stone that provides its bed. This image seems embryonic to me, an echo of birth of the earth itself. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, which he began to form upon his visit to the Galapagos in 1835, could add still another level of context to this photograph -- the relationship of living things to their environment helps determines the survival of the fittest.

Thanks, Iris, for reading the meaning of this image exactly as I intended. The more I look at it, the more it makes me wonder about the origins of both the earth and of life itself. Few subjects, as you note, can be as emotionally provocative.

This image certainly has a mythical quality which, I agree, echoes "the birth of the earth itself". For me, this image is emotionally very provocative.

Thanks, Carol. Yes -- this sea lion occupies this space alone. And it does look like a golden nugget in a black velvet case.

His own private space in which he can relax...something we all need once in awhile. I like how he is golden almost metallic in color against the hard, dark rocks.

Thanks, Tim. I saw the memory of fire here as well. It works as an incubator of life itself. I loved the contrasting colors as well, along with those echoing curved rocks and curved sea lion.

I respond to the comfort here - it as if the memory of the fire that created the rock provide a nurturing resting place for the sea lion. The contrast in colors is also amazing.
