Window cleaner, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

While others come to Mission Beach to relax and play, some earn their livelihoods here. This man washes the windows of an elaborate beach house along the Boardwalk. I create an expressive image out of such a literal subject by emphasizing his reflected image in the window, as much as the man himself. The evening sun illuminates his arm and the back of his neck, as well as some of the clothing he wears. His intense expression, and well as the tool he uses, comes through in the silhouetted profile visible in the reflection. I compose the image as a study in repeating geometric rhythms. The diagonal thrust of the legs is repeated in the diagonal line of the ladder and the diagonal reflection. The repeating vertical thrusts of the window separators carry us through the image, as well.

Thanks, Jenene, for commenting on the role of dividers in an image. They will often create splits that can contrast one part of an image to another. In this case, the divider doubles the size of the man in reflection by reflecting him twice, and implies the scope of the task he regularly faces.

I'm drawn to the way the verticals on the windows split his reflection and make it larger than the man himself. He has to redo the windows constantly, but his oversize self will handle the task with his real self's focus and intensity.

Thanks, Iris, for noticing the intensity of the man's focus on his work. The image makes us wonder if he applies the same sense of care, purpose, and pride to his life.

He seems very intense and intent upon doing a good job. There is pride in a job well done regardless how simple or menial the task might be. Good for him!

Hi, Jerome -- good to hear from you. Yes, he does take his work seriously. He does his work very well -- those windows sparkle. Because of the salty air, he must have to redo these windows constantly.

seems like he's taking it very seriously, v.
