Observation car, Aboard The Canadian, Ontario, Canada, 2009

I found this passenger sitting alone with his thoughts in a vintage observation car on “The Canadian” running between Toronto and Vancouver. This car entered service in the mid-1950s, and has changed very little since. The curving glass windows look out on forests of pine and a track that seems to follow the train forever.
The chairs that circle the interior of the car have been cradling passengers for more than a half-century, encasing this traveler in nostalgic atmosphere. His mood is reflective – perhaps he may be thinking of past journeys in similar railroad cars over the years?

Thanks, John, for your eloquent response to this image. This is a very emotional image, loaded with unanswerable questions. I never talked with this fellow so I have no idea of his story, but given his age, and the fact that he taking this trip across Canada by train, I would guess that he would have a lot to tell us. Glad that I've been able to convey at least the mood and atmosphere surrounding his journey.

I like this shot - the rails, the fir trees rushing by, the feel that even the interior lights are moving in their own way. Imagine all the scenes that have played out here as happens when travelers are put together on a long trip! The man could be thinking of things past, but he could be thinking of things to come. As in “what will become of me?” It could be “How will I get along without her” if he is a widower! He does look deep in thought and seems far away and it’s anyone guess if it is past worries or worry about the future. There is a story here! I would love to ask about his! (When the time was right.)
Great shot Phil! It stirs emotions and poses questions!

I don't think this fellow was also the subject of my image "Sunday Morning" (http://www.pbase.com/image/118103781 ) -- he boarded the train in Toronto with us, and the Sunday Morning image was made in Montreal, and I don't know if that man owns a blue sweater -- he was wearing a gray jacket in my original color file. I agree that the tracks play a large part in meaning here -- they symbolize distance as they vanish into the past. As many of us, tis man in the blue sweater has traveled a long way, and not just on this train trip.

I find the train track fading in the distance to also be a vital part of this image. He does seem to be reflecting (I wonder if he left the wall in your image "Sunday Morning" with his blue sweater and got on the train?) and the tracks seem to indicate that he is reflecting on where he has been, how he has lived.
