Temple Square, Salt Lake City, Utah, 2008

Temple Square is the epicenter of the Mormon church. Religious subjects are, by their very nature, potentially larger than life. To make them work as expressive photographs, we must be able to convey some kind of spiritual presence. In this case, the massive backlighted clouds looming behind the Mormon spires do just that. The backlighting also abstracts the structures, removing detail, and leaving more to the imagination in the process. By including the foreground layer of spikes (the fence at lower left), I add a sense of depth. A cloud of steam coming from one of the buildings rises between that fence and the Mormon temple, providing additional atmospheric content. All of these elements, when taken together, make this image seem larger than life.

Thanks for noting the flow of detail through this image, Chris. Some of the detail, such as the steam echoing the clouds, is subtly expressed, but still very important to the meaning here.

Every detail here helps for the creation of this beauty!

The idea of the clouds intensifying the mysteries of belief within these structures is wonderful, Jenene. And the angel can certainly symbolize the singular nature of belief as well. Thanks for these thoughts, as always.

This image underscores how personal faith is to mankind. The lone angel Moroni atop the temple spire could equate to an individual's relationship with his/her higher power - singular and one to one. No one should or could tell someone what or how to believe. The clouds do what clouds do - they obscure things and lend an air of mystery.

Thank you, Alina, for feeling the spiritual energy in this image, which certainly is larger than life and also enhances the mood.
