The Wagon Wheel Café, Chemult, Oregon, 2008

This sign, up on top of the café, is definitely indeed to be seen by night, rather than in the unsparing light of day. I used my full 420mm zoom to reveal the truth about this sign. Its neon might work perfectly, but the condition of the paint incongruously screams for repairs, a symbol of neglect. I wonder how many patrons even bother to look up at it? The locals probably take it for granted, and out of towners will first see it from a distance, and by the time they get close, their eyes will already be on the parking lot.

Thanks, DK. Sorry for the late response, but I don't check comments here frequently anymore. It is sad to learn that this sign has been removed. I, too hope that it has found a good home, and was not simply scrapped. If it is gone forever, at least this image will stand as documentation as well as interpretation. Thanks for commenting.

A working sign with faded or peeling paint & some rust is actually a thing of beauty. This sign is over 60 years old & why should it look like new. It's one of the great signs in Central Oregon & has now been removed, which is sad, since it was the only cool sign in the area. Hopefully grabbed by a collector, rather than scrapped. What a loss.
