World War 2 Pictures

This gallery is dedicated to my Father: Joseph A Landry who served in War World 2 in North Africa as an MP as part of Battery D 107th Sep C A Battalion.

He enjoyed taken photos of his fellow soldiers and of the landscapes around him. I estimate that there are 400 or more photos that he took during that time, as well as a number of purchased photos and postcards.

The captions to the photos contain the information that was written on the back or sides of the original photo. Some contain the name of the soldier or the location of the photo. I know nothing else about the photographs.

I have sent all of these photos and more to the World War II museum in New Orleans LA so that they could be preserved for history. http://www.nationalww2museum.org/index.html

Att, Nancy Landry: Did your father send you any of the 23 columns of Seein Cairo published in the Huckstep paper in 1945 - written by me with cartoons by Misha. Praised by Andre Gide at the Cataract Hotel in Aswan who said to me: " Come visit me at home. I would like to see what you have to say about Paris. I am Leon Volan featured columnist of SEEIN CAIRSO 23 illustrated articles published in I I I am Leon Volan columnist on Sandscript in camp Huckstep in 1945. I was on Stars & /Stripes in Cairo and wrote the lead page article of our impressions at the end of WW2. The headline is:Jap Surrender News Was Uplifting as Atom Bomb . What a great idea, Nancy. I wish my Father were alive to see these! He flew B-26's in the war but luckily bombed only targets for practice and no people.

Hallo, It is sad to me to see these pictures. They remind me of my youth in Japanese concentration camps. My sister died. We were set free by the British Indian Army At the time that I was a child of 9, our trooper M.S. "Tjisadane" was on her way from Indonesia to Holland and boarded Ataka. We were brought ashore with landing-ships in order to receive near Ataka warm clothing for Holland. A little train brought us deeper into the desert. I remember that a group of German POW musicians had to play our national hyme. Carel Zoomers.

Hello Nancy- My name is John and I live in Iowa. Major Russell Benjamin Huckstep was my great uncle. If you visit findagrave.com, you can see pictures of him and his family. From time to time, I search the net for info on Camp Huckstep and it seems that it gradually pops up, but there is no website dedicated to Camp Huckstep. Major Huckstep was originally in the Eritrea Service Command and was sent to Cairo, along with 23 other officers, to concentrate the service commands into one large military instalation. The particulars of this move have escaped me, mostly but I do know that their plane encountered a large storm, maybe a dust storm, and hit a mountain on Feburary 23, 1943. There were no survivors and it took the military until July to find the wreckage and recover the bodies, being lucky to find them at all. This is a nice little web site that you have. I want to start one myself, about Camp Huckstep, as a place for people to go and leave notes and memories. This is very nice what you have here for your father and his photo collection. My thanks to all of you for sharing your insights about Camp Huckstep. My late father-in-law was Corporal David Parry. He was stationed at Camp Huckstep during 1945-46. He was a musician (mostly cornet and trumpet) in an army band (309th ASF Band). His duties included playing reveille to wake the camp each morning, which made him feel disliked by his fellow soldiers. He served as an escort for burial of fallen soldiers. He also was involved with the armed forces radio while at Camp Huckstep, but I do not know more about that. Thanks again, to all of you. Gary Mayer

Hello Nancy, My uncle was also at Camp Huckstep as an MP in the 128th MP Company 42-45. Your photos help me know what it was like there. I am working on discovering all I can about his time there. His name was Clarence H. Sturgeon from St. John, Maine. I have some letters from him mentioning camp, Alexandria,the Holy Land, and Cairo. He died of yellow fever complications Jan. 47.I would be glad to share any findings with you. Thanks for your father's wonderful memories.

June 23, '07 May I add this to my above note about my husb who was at Camp Huckstep from 1942 until 1945? Still no contact from any one who knows about the Nefertite bookends I mentioned. That is understandable because because there were so few of them made in shop at camp. I have been looking through his letters written from Egypt during this time and have found some names I had forgotten. Bob Russell, and Eddie, with no last name and Woody, with no last name. But Woody I know was from Wilkes Barre, Pa. and was my husband's tennis partner and I know they must have been pretty good because they were sent to France, I think, to play in a tournament against the best of the best. (They didn't win but had the priveledge of having played agains these men in this tournament). If any one reads this and finds these name to be familiar it would be great to hear from them. Thanks. I am Jan George Hogenkamp and looking for information about Ataka where my mother and i got blankets and clothings during a stop of the passengervessel New Amsterdam in the Suezcanal on her voyage from Singapore to England,repatriating dutch women and children which had been liberated from japanese prisoncamps in august/september 1945. message dated 17 june 2007.

I enjoyed your photos as my husband, Roy S Witt (from Camp McCoy, Wisc.) was also stationed at Camp Huckstep in Egypt from 1942-45 with the 2888th Engineers Service Battalion. He took many photos and some have similar backgrounds as the ones you posted. During the time he was at Camp Huckstep he and several other men made metal bookends of Queen Nefertiti from melting leftover metals from the shop that was on base. The bookends have been a treasure to our family all these years and we are wondering if there is possibly another soldier who might have made a pair also. The bookends are gold colored with a mahogany base and are quite heavy. My husband passed away in 1974 so am unable to get more details from him. My children are also looking for a way to reproduce the bookends for each of them. If anyone has heard of these bookends I would love to hear from them. Faye R
