Herons in flight

These herons were observed flying during the season when they gather for breeding. Once under way, they curl their necks and seem much smaller than when they stand with their necks extended, for example to hunt for fish. Their wingspan though is impressive. They glide part of the time, conserving energy. Their beaks show the deeper, more red-orange colour and they have the white feathers on their backs, both part of their display when pairing up with a partner to get ready to nest and have their chicks. Their breeding display can be seen better in the next gallery showing them gathering on a field.
