Located in southern Wayne County near the town of Seven Springs(called Sabeen Sprangs by the locals), the Cliffs of the Neuse has a taste of the mountains right here in the coastal plain. Named after the high cliffs overlooking the Neuse River, the park has varied habitats. Dry oak/hickory forests occupy the higher terrain while wet floodplain borders the River's edge.
In 1944 Lionel Weil, local landowner, proposed that the cliffs area along the Neuse River be preserved as a state park. The park was established in 1945 when he donated land on the south side of the river. An additional 200 acres extended the boundary east of the river. The present size of the park is now 890 acres.

I made a day trip back to the Cliffs to shoot the native orchid Goodyear. No plants did I find, but my hike was not a complete bust. I found several different species of fungi plus the highlight of the trip was a clutch wild turkey eggs! Images start on page 2.
