A reflection from Lao Guos Brave and Private Departure
Since Dongxian made the initial announcement about the shocking news of Lao Guos untimely passing over the weekend, we have logged in more than 2000 page views to the memorial site where people left behind their memories and condolence. While Lao Guo had chosen to engage a very brave and private battle against the deadly disease, little did he realize that his unwillingness to burden any of his Bio78 fellow classmates would, in contrast, send such a great shockwave among us, more than 9 months after his final exit. . In the end, Lao Guo has certainly brought us all closer as a group.
Lao Guo died of pancreatic cancer which kills more than 90% of people (mostly men) within a year of their initial diagnosis, often at the peak of their careers. Notably, as many of you may know, these included Professor Randy Pausch who became famous for his Last lecture after his diagnosis:
Both of them, in contrast to Lao Guo, chose to face their destiny in a very public fight in losing battles against the disease. Either way, the sharp contrast in life and death of these three full-blooded men at the prime of their lives reminds us all of our mortality as well as how fragile life could be. After all, we are all here for a brief visit of this wonderful earth, a mysterious journey that we call life.
