Anybody Want Some Pancakes?

This is what's called pancake ice. It forms when the ice crystals, called frazil, form and are disturbed by rough water which in turn makes the disks. The edges or ridges get turned up from bumping into each other. Here on Lake Ontario the rough water came from really strong winds we had the past few days.
I enjoy finding the pancake ice on the lake even though it was bitter cold out there.

That is wild! I never knew anything about that kind of thing. Great image of it too. ~V~

Cool (no pun) phenomenon. Nice find, Patti (especially since you braved some goofy cold temps to get this shot).

Nice to see such a fine picture of this phenomenon.
Another of nature's wonders., a sculpture formed from water, bitter cold and wind.
(Your fingers and toes must have felt. "Frazilled" too.

If you stepped lightly I wonder how far you could get? Wish we had these on the Mississippi River, if we did there would be some birds on them.
