Marsh Brush Fire

Yesterday, Tuesday, a brush fire started in the dry marsh grasses along Buck Pond. By the time it was out this morning (thanks in part to some heavy rainfall this morning and lots of hard work from area fire crews last night) about 100 acres of marsh burned but thankfully no one was hurt and no property other than the marsh was damaged.
Had this happened on Monday it would have been a disaster because it was 80F on Monday with 45 mph winds out of the SW and it could have taken out a few business and several homes on the north side of the pond which borders Lake Ontario. However yesterday the wind was very light and out of the north which blew the fire to the south into the pond and towards the parkway.
While this is a shame, it's not that bad of a thing to have happen to the marsh as it will rejuvenate the marsh when it grows back. I spoke with a couple of New York State forest rangers who were there to assess the damage and try to figure out what happened. They weren't giving out any info on the cause but assured me there is no category for "unexplained". Current conjecture has the cause as a carelessly tossed cigarette from a passing car on Edgemere Dr because that's where the fire started.

Wonder how many little critters had to abandon their homes... or worse. Nicely documented.

Wild growth near developed areas sure can be a problem. Controlled burning is used here to avoid bush-fires, but not nearly often enough. You will see vigorous regrowth after this event, so it's not all bad.

A cycle of renew; but, possibly out of synch with Mother Nature when caused by man?
You've been having quite a spring.

We use fire out here to burn our dead grass' and they soon become a lush green again...
The rangers at our marsh have been burning sections since the snow left...

I think of all the "control burns" that happen every Spring around Cassville and then you hear of a careless person causing all this concern of all the home and business owners. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose! Nice coverage Patti!

Sometimes things grow back better after a fire. Nice photojournalism.

You won't know there was a fire there before this growing season is over. It will be greener than ever.

Lucky it wasn't windy or bone dry. We've had horrendous fires here and by far most of them were started out of carelessness or arson.
