Pahiyas 2011

Pahiyas Festival is held in Lucban, Quezon every May 15 in honor of it's Patron Saint San Isidro Labrador. San Isidro Labrador is believed to be the patron saint of farmers. Each year, the farmers hold a thanksgiving procession in honor of San Isidro Labrador, for the bountiful harvest. Such a tradition was introduced by the Spaniards way back the 1600s. A similar tradition is also celebrated in Mexico.

The center of attraction in this festival are the very colorful "kiping". "Kiping" is made from rice flour and shaped into leaves and the houses along the procession route are decorated with it. I got to taste the roasted version, wherein sugar was sprinkled to the "kiping" and then was roasted over charcoal. Others say that it has a deep fried version as well. Another side attraction is the famous "pancit hab-hab". It's a noodle dish wherein tradition requires you to eat it without using any utensils. And lastly, the very spicy but tasty Lucban longganisa. Lucban's very own sausage.

My father is from Lucena, Quezon and all through out the years of my existence, it's my first time to attend this festivity. I hope and pray to San Isidro Labrador that it won't be the last.
