Formerly Bazhena, Navies made it's way to the West coast to blow me away. Navies is generating music that I cannot put into words. This was the best set of music I had witnessed in 2004, and I hesitate to say that when I consider the amazing sets that I have been lucky to behold. I say this only to highlight what an increadible moment it was for me to hear something so directly cultured for my ears and mind. If you live near D.C. and you appreciate intelligent independent music, see this band. Without a doubt, some of the most significant new music I've ever heard and you can quote me about them. Thank you Navies. In March of 2005 I attempted to see them 4 times in 3 days in 4 cities. Unfortunately, my car could only manage 2 cities. Technical issues asside, it was awesome to witness this band again. I will be posting more shots from my roadtrip as I process them. I hope the variety of shots I've posted will give the viewer some sense of Navies 'Dynamics'. They, like any band, had a communication that was unique to those three members. Somehow, Navies seemed to be 'saying more'. Perhaps it's was just me, or perhaps I was more able to understand their particular communication. Like Playstation Hockey with your best friends, you know when to crash the net and look for rebounds and when to drop back and take out the forwards. Chemistry and top strings tuned to 'G'. I've now spent my last two Independence Days with Navies (and a fist-full of other great bands) and I cannot think of a better way of celebrating the concept of 'freedom' and 'independence'. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad I ain't drinking tea with biscuits and singin' songs about saving Queens. I'm just saying that I enjoyed spending quality time as an independant person with a group of people who actually attempt to exercise those freedoms. Navies chose to use one of my photos of them in the layout of their EP "An Estate", out on Lovitt Records.
