A young woman who was waiting in line with me one day. |
 Convention hall at Coimbatore |
 Men's dorm |
 C. Willson and E. Parsons and I eat curry off of banana leaf plates. |
This little steam train travels daily between Mettupalayam and Ooty the hillstation at 7000 ft. |
The little train stopped 5 times for water and at one location some repairs. |
The train was said to be from Switzerland. |
The slope up is so steep that it is driven by a gear connected to a central track. |
Some of the stops had food stores/shops. |
One of the many bridges. Note the central track. |
The train was full so I 'begged' my way into one of the pre-booked cabins and quickly made friends with four brothers on holiday |
Only a mother could love this guy! He has a full cheek of food handouts. |
 Beautiful colors |
Another fellow traveler. This lady was in the both just in front of me in the same carriage. |
Happy travelers. At this stop, my photo was taken -- by a person I work with. With a pop. of over 1 b. who would have guessed! |
Farmlands on the way up. |
Ooty is an old colognial town or 'hillstation.' This is Charings Cross. |
I walked up to Old Ooty district and sat for a while watching children fly kits. It is a simple life here. |
I took a taxi out into the countryside to visit a lake. This is what the small villages look like. |
The weekend I arrived in India was a Hindu festival of harvest. They decorate their cows -- some with bells and even tinsel. |
A local indigenous tribal temple -- the Toda tribe who were strict vegetarian and worshiped the buffalo -- note the carving. |
This old man was having tea at a tea shop that we stopped at. |
Traveling off the hill station I went on to Mudhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. 28 kms and 32 hairpin turns! |
Well rewarded for the trip down, these Spotted Deer found the lodge area a safe haven. |
Along the road to the park, we stopped to watch Common Langur monkey. |
Crossing the main road near the park were wild elephant. |
I hired a wonderful looking game guide who took me along a river and we sat waiting for animals to come in the evening. |
We were rewarded by a sambar deer which is much like an elk. |
As well as a bison. |
Most of the roads in India are paved. This is the road going towards the park. |
I would recommend walking in India to see animals rather than going on the government run game drives. |
Or hire your own jeep, but even here, the experience of quietly walking and waiting is much better than driving. |
Sunrise over the hills. A 4:30 wakeup lets you see it. |
The next lodge over had a bike tour come though -- ohh! I would like to do one of those. |
