We came upon some hyenas that were preoccupied with something in the long grass.
As we drew near, one of them lifted his head to show us his prize, a wildebeest
skull. In earlier times believed to be primarily scavengers, it is now known
that spotted hyenas are hunters in their own right, and while they do scavenge
from lions, cheetahs and other predators, they also make many kills themselves,
unaided.
