On this safari, we were fortunate to see one of the great wildlife spectacles of
East Africa, wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River. The great herds, massed
along the river in preparation for crossing, usually make several false starts before
finally, committed, taking the plunge. And plunge it is, for they cross in a
grunting, panicky herd, hundreds--usually thousands--at a time. Here, they have
reached the river bank, then lost their resolve and turned back.
