Elsen and his friend, Amy Sandys-Lumsdaine took Martha and me on this safari to
the Mara. For Elsen, it was a return to the locale of his 1982-83 field research
for his MSc degree from the University of Edmonton, in Canada.
For two years he lived under canvas, as he studied the population biology
and behavior of the Mara River hippopotamus.
