Pieter Jansz. Saenredam died 31 may 1665. He specialised in Dutch church interiors. His paintings are characterised by his cool use of colour and the strict, almost mathematical spaciousness.
This street scene of Utrecht shows the Dom tower in the middle, to the left the towers of the Buur church and to the right the Maria church.

Dit schilderij dateert uit 1662. In 1636 verbleef Saenredam 5 maanden in Utrecht en maakte daar studies. Die schijnt hij daarna gedurende zijn gehele leven, wonend in Haarlem, te hebben (her)gebruikt.

De Buurkerk en Dom links in beeld bestaan tot op heden, de Romaanse Mariakerk, rechts, is in de 19e eeuw afgebroken.
