Hendrik Petrus (Hein) Berlage (1856–1934) is widely regarded as the father of modern Dutch architecture. This specific portrait hangs in the monumental Berlage Building on Kerkplein in The Hague.
This building was originally designed by him in 1895–1896 as the headquarters for the insurance company De Nederlanden van 1845. Today, it serves as a hotel.
