North Caineville Mesa, a striking table mountain that is part of the larger Colorado Plateau.
The rugged, ash-gray and purplish hills at the foot of the mesa consist of Mancos Shale.
The steep, golden-brown cliffs and the flat top consist of the harder Ferron Sandstone layer.
Because the soil is extremely infertile and saline, virtually no vegetation grows there.
