Small towns in Southern Italy and particularly in Sicily have obtained government money to build large public projects absolutely disproportionate to the size of the town. These projects are almost never finished. A typical example is the financing of 5.5 million dollars received by the city of Giarre (27.000 people) to build a Polo Stadium that was never finished. Giarre is also the town with the highest concentration of unfinished projects. All together an investment of public money close to 70 million dollars. Mafia and corrupt politicians have earned a lot of money from the projects.
By the way, polo is a non-existent sport in Sicily. The closest thing to a game of polo the stadium has ever seen came in 2012 when a group of youngsters decided to organize an ironic polo match, which they played on sticks with cardboard horse heads attached.
