The Château de Chillon (1248) is a well-preserved medieval castle situated on a rocky islet on the shore of Lake Geneva near Veytaux (close to Montreux).
The castle is heavily fortified on the land side for defense, while the water side has the allure of a princely palace. For centuries, it served as the heavily guarded summer residence and administrative center for the Counts of Savoy. Today, the castle serves as a historical museum.
