In Mornington, County Meath, you will find the Maiden Tower and the nearby Lady's Finger, two remarkable historic beacons at the mouth of the River Boyne. The Maiden Tower is visible in the photo. The towers were built at the end of the 16th century (around 1582) as beacons to guide sailors safely up the river towards the port of Drogheda. The Maiden Tower is a slender, square tower with battlements at the top. Inside, there is a spiral staircase leading to the roof. The building visible next to the tower in the photo is a former RNLI rescue station (1872–1926). It was restored in 2003 and now serves as a private residence.
