In the foreground is a stack of lobster and crab baskets, often called lobster pots or creels. These are traditional traps used by fishermen in Roundstone for coastal fishing. The baskets in this photo are made of sturdy synthetic mesh (usually nylon) stretched over a steel or plastic frame. Heavy rubber is often fitted to the bottom to protect the basket from wear and tear on the rocky seabed. The baskets are placed on the seabed in long lines (fleets) and marked with a buoy on the surface so that fishermen can retrieve them later. The traps have a funnel-shaped opening through which a lobster or crab can enter (lured by bait), but finds it very difficult to get out again.
