Bunowen Castle

Aillebrack Pier, townland Aillebrack, Co. Galway view map

The ruins of Bunowen Castle (also known as O'Flaherty’s Castle) are located near Ballyconneely in Connemara, Ireland, at the foot of the Hill of Doon. The site is best known as the former residence of the famous pirate queen Grace O'Malley. Technically, the current structure is an 18th- and 19th-century country house, built on or near the site of a much older medieval fortress. The ruins are situated on private property and are not open to the public. Owners discourage visitors due to safety risks and privacy concerns. The photo was therefore taken from Bunowen Pier.
