Ruin known for its blend of medieval and 17th-century architecture. The complex consists of a 15th-century residential tower and a four-story manor house added later.
The Residential Tower (c. 1480): The oldest part is a typical five-story Irish residential tower, built by Toirdhealbhach Donn Ó Briain, a direct descendant of the famous High King Brian Boru.
The Manor (1648): Conor O'Brien and his wife Máire Rua MacMahon added a luxurious manor house to the west side of the tower. This section featured large mullioned windows and a decorative style that was rare in turbulent Ireland at the time.
Decline: In 1689, the family moved to Dromoland Castle. By the end of the 18th century, Leamaneh had completely fallen into ruin. The history of the castle is inextricably linked to the infamous Máire Rua, known for her flaming red hair and alleged cruelty. According to folklore, she was a tyrant who hung staff out of the castle windows by their hair if they displeased her.
The castle is considered one of the most haunted places in Ireland; it is said that the ghost of Máire Rua still wanders the corridors.
