The Royal Hotel Valentia in Knightstown is one of the oldest hotels in Ireland and a historic landmark on Valentia Island. The building is known for its classic 19th-century architecture.
It is a distinctive building with dormers and a stately appearance. The interior exudes an "old world" atmosphere with antique details and fireplaces.
Built in 1833 as a small, comfortable inn named "The Inn". In the early 1840s, the inn was replaced by a larger building, which was initially named the Valentia Hotel and later Young's Hotel. Around 1880, the property took on its current form, with an additional wing added in the 1930s. Since 2006, the hotel has been thoroughly restored.
The hotel received the designation "Royal" following a visit by Prince Arthur (son of Queen Victoria) in 1869. In 1897, the Duke and Duchess of York (the future King George V and Queen Mary) also visited the hotel.
