The small church in the background is the Church of St. Brendan the Navigator. It is one of the most iconic and historically significant buildings in this part of West Cork. It is a Church of Ireland (Anglican) church belonging to the Kilmoe Union of Parishes.
The current church was built in 1717. It replaced an earlier church (Kilmoe) that had fallen into disrepair around 1700. The coat of arms of Bishop Peter Browne, who commissioned the construction, is engraved on the exterior of the western wall. After being closed for many years, the building was restored and reopened for worship in 1960.
The church has no electricity. The lighting comes entirely from gas lamps and candles.
