This imposing building on North Main Street in Youghal is known as The Red House. It is one of the rarest and best-preserved examples of an 18th-century Dutch-style townhouse in Ireland.
The name comes from the red terracotta bricks, which were imported from the Netherlands as ballast on ships at the time.
The house was built in the early 18th century, circa 1703–1710, by the Dutch architect and builder Claud Leuventhen. The building is a classic example of the Queen Anne style or the Dutch Baroque style (William and Mary).
It was built for the wealthy Uniacke family, an influential merchant family in Youghal, some of whose members served as mayors of the town. Originally, it served as a stately home for the Uniacke family. Today, it is a private residence. Over the years, one of the original side wings has been converted into the Imperial Hotel.
