The famous bronze whale sculpture in the West Edmonton Mall is officially called "Open Sea." The artwork was commissioned in 1983 and completed between 1984 and 1985 by Canadian artist Robin Bell.
Although often mistaken for a single whale, the sculpture actually depicts two North Atlantic right whales: a head emerging from the water and a tail swooping down nearby.
