The endangered Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Celeus obrieni) was rediscovered in 2006 after an 80 year lapse. To elucidate the current distribution and numbers of the species, in 2008 and 2009 Tulio Dornas and colleagues travelled 9,000 kilometers in the states of Tocantins, Bahia, Goiás, and Mato Grosso to do playback surveys, primarily at bamboo breaks now known to be selected by the species. In this photo Tulio Dornas is playing vocalizations of Kaempfer's Woodpecker just after sunrise. Pium municipality, Tocantins, Brazil
