Ryan:

Thanks, I will join your forum. Most of the time I go to Fred Miranda's, but there are fewer and fewer people showing their work.

I have seen your macro shots on pbase and really like your work. I have a new photography forum and we have a section dedicated to macro photography where you can share your work, get comment/critique on it, and can also help others by leaving comment/critique on their work. We have a really great group of guys on there and would love for you to join and share you work too. We also have many other photography sections
Hope to see you on the site

One of the best galleries on pbase thus far.

Hi phuang, Sorry for the long delay!

I would love to upgrade to a 5D. There's just nothing better than a wide viewfinder for manual focus work. My Kat split screen is dead-on even at f1.4, which is the biggest aperture lens I have right now. Also I'm using the Olymous 1.2x magnifier (forgot its name).

I agree movie lenses tend to have lower contrast and micro contrast. But they have great color and bokeh - to my eyes. The kinoptik is also a mystery to me. I think its a very good lens, but certainly not deserving of the high praises (and price) that a lot of people pay to it.

I didn't know that Leica make "bad copy" lenses. :p Seriously though, it must be extremely rare to get one.

Leica lenses are great but I think Zeiss glass has more of a 3D effect.

Hello Raymond:

First of all, I didn't tried 20D, but 30D's matt screen + DK-17M will do a good job in manual focusing for me. I used to had Canon EC-A prism and Nikon K3 split which is believed identical to Kat's. To my experience, both of them will not focus accurately at wide apertures, especially at f1.4. I guess 5D's EE-S matt screen will do even better since its matt screen is finer. Eventually, I took off the AF chip because it sometimes confuse me. My AF chip is based on f2.8 and I was told newer version with f1.4 is more accurate.
I got a friend who has some old movie lenses, and he is my main source. I've seen photos from Angenieux 180/2.3, 100/2.8, 50/1.8, 70-210/2.5, Cook 75, and Kinoptik 100/2 + 70/2. To me, those are excelent choices for creative works, e.g A100/2.8 has decent cat's eye effect that produces amazing photos for portraits. Cook 75 has lower contrast and more aberrations wide open, but it adds a distinct flavor into the photo which is very nice. Lot of people praise Kinoptik 100/2, but stricktly speaking, it's not better than Leica 100/2.8 @ 2.8(Maybe a bad copy) In terms of performance, Leica has great micro-contrast which brings 3D look on objects. K100/2 is 4 element-based, it should not outperform a later APO lense from Leica. Personally, I prefer Leica which produces high quality and durability lenses.

Hell phuang,

I use a DK-21M on a 20D, plus Kateye focusing screen and Rudolf's autofocus confirmation adapter. But it still is a pain to focus in some areas, like portraits and darker areas, ect.

Hmm, which movies lenses have you tried? I have seen pretty good examples of Cooke "speed panchro" and "deep field panchro" series, and Kinoptik 50, 75, 100, 150 APO are awesome too. For Angenieux, the ones I know are the 50/1.5 50/1.8 and 90/1.8 that are excellent. Currently I'm using the Angenieux 50/1.8 and have Kinoptik 100/2 APO and Cooke 100/2.5 deep field panchro on the way. My Angenieux has very good colors and bokeh, albeit, rather soft from f1.8 to 4. However, since technically speaking, it is not a movie lens, I suspect that true movie lenses will have better performance.

To Raymond:

For small viewfinder, I use a Nikon DK-17M to enlarge the view. DK-17M has a enlargement factor of 1.2, the result is close to a regular SLR.
I did some test shot on movie lenses, but unfortunately I haven't found anyone I like. My experience are mostly on Angenieux, Kinoptik and Cook. Some of them are very good lenses, but still, not comparable to Leica. To me, angenieux has better and consistent image quality. Have you tried any of them? It'd be great if you could share some of your experience.

Hi phuang! I've seen your posts at FM, I too am a regular there.

I hope I don't come off as rude, but how come you're using very experience manual focues lenses on a small viewfinder like the 300D and 30D?

I really like your photos of the Leica lenses. Have you tried converted movie lenses?

Hi! I am glad to share some of my experiences with you.
1. Well. Before I switch to 30D, my only DSLR is 300D whose image quality is quite good to me. In fact, I only apply standard settings on my 30D & 300D, perhaps one stop boosted on the saturation. That's it. The color rendition varies while using different lenses. What lenses are you using?

2.I had split screen on 300D and also purchased the german AF chip at the very beginning. However, they are not quite useful to me. First, my split screen is Nikon K3 which claimed not getting dark at small apertures. That sounds pretty good, but this will decrease the accuracy of the focusing aid. Canon EC-A was also purchased on my 300D which is more accurate, but will get dark after f4.0. Second, my AF chip is fixed at f2.8. Normally, it is ok for mediaum or small aperture lesnes. Yet, it just doesn't work well on a wide-opened Summilux. Newer chips from Hong Kong are based on f2.0 or f1.4 which is better. However, both of them does not solve my problem until 30D came out. 30D has a precision matt screen. Combined with Nikon's DK21M or DK17M 1.2X viewfinder magnifier, the matt screen is highly accurate and lack of serious darkening problem. Now, I am very satisfied with the result.

3.The matrix metering works well most of the time before f4.0. EV compensation is required for +1/3EV @f4 & f5.6. After f5.6, +2/3EV is recommended. This is because the matt screen is actually no other than a prism screen but at a very small scale. In other words, it will slightly get dark, too.

4. The EF17-40 is my first EF lense. Actually, I was quite disappointed at first. That's part of the reason I turn to Leica. However, any wide angle zoom should not be critically judged in terms of sharpness. For me, the EF17-40 will only give good results at f8.0. On a full frame camera, it's corner is pretty soft and shows some CA. Some post-processing is needed for these kind of lenses. 99% of the photos on PBASE are resized which look sharp on the screen, but it's really hard to tell the real performance of certain lenses.

Duy, I am quite suprised to hear that you're only 19! You still got plenty of time to improve your skill. Leica gear are not cheap, and they may not be your first choice. In fact, good photo techniques are the keys to a successful photographer. I'd suggest you join any photo club. I learned a lot from my teacher, and is still learning. I wish I could be a pro, either. If you have any question, please feel free to ask. I may not be an expert, but we can share our experiences.

hi! your images are just amazing. I'm very impressed with your 50 sumilux 1.4 of those pix are just unbelievable. I have a questions for you though. :)hope you have a little time to help me out. :)

1- How would your leica lens perform so well with your canon 350d in term of color and sharpness? And the 3D look?
2- I never get the sharpness as i always wanted when i use my leica R lenses on my canon 20d. I used split screen + confirmation chip, but it just doesn't work perfectly for me. What should i do to improve that?
3- Would matrix metering give you the correct exposure for the color to come out so true?
4- i saw your works with the 17-40mm L too, it's so real and clear, is there any thing i can do to improve my picture quality like yours?

You have a nice porfolio, i hope you have time to help me out. By the way, my name is Duy, i'm 19, and i am really interested in photography. Thank you so much. :)
