A trip to the mainland last weekend provided an opportunity to visit Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen where two Northern Harriers were seen participating in their cycle of life. Location of their nest was obvious when the female dove steeply into a thick bed of reeds then shortly thereafter her male counterpart was observed returning from a successful hunt, flying toward the nest with prey clutched tightly in its talons. What occurred next is a feat few know exists and even less have observed ... calling for the female ... he circled above until she departed the nest and flew upward to meet him ... then the male transferred its prey to the female via aerial-pass ... whereupon the female once again returned to the nest to feed her young.
It's times such as this that make photographing wildlife so fascinating.
