December Challenge - Book Titles: For Whom the Bell Tolls
A novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940.
I was walking my dog in New Haven on Sunday and was startled to hear
loud bells playing overhead. I checked my watch, it was not announcing
the time, and I wondered for whom the bells tolled. Then parishioners
started to pour out the door. The bells announced the end of the Sunday Service.
I listened to the brief performance, it seemed far more elaborate than
the usually Ding Dong of church bells I've heard. The music was too
advanced to be a bunch of bellringers pulling ropes. I've often listened
to the nearby Harkness Tower of Yale University which contains a world
class carillon (largest bell is 14,000 pounds). Yet I can not find
anything on the web to verify this church has a carillon.
I guess I should just enjoy it and not analyze it!
